Interview on “Yardbird”

Check out this interview I did with All About Jazz discussing my new opera Charlie Parker’s Yardbird.

New website, Bandcamp & Tumblr

While I have run a web shop for sheet music and CDs for more than 10 years, now I am adding an online shop of many of my recordings via Bandcamp – including previously unreleased material. Also, I have opened a Tumblr account which is built into the site and will be my news feed from now on. Go check out both!

You can not only prelisten and download my music on Bandcamp itself. Bandcamp is also tightly integrated in the Records and Compositions sections of my new and redesigned website:

  • When you browse to Records, you can listen to the recordings on their detail pages (click on “More details”)
  • When you browse the Compositions database, the note symbol on the right-hand side of a compositions opens a player where you can prelisten to its recording.

I hope you enjoy all of it. Feedback and suggestions are welcome!

Charlie Parker’s Yardbird premieres in June

Opera Philadelphia has commissioned a new opera by Daniel Schnyder based on the life of legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker (1920-1955). My new work will premiere on June 5, 2015.

American tenor Lawrence Brownlee will star as Parker in a work written for him by Schnyder, with a libretto by poet and playwright Bridgette A. Wimberly. Soprano Angela Brown will costar as Charlie’s mother, Addie Parker. The opera has been developed in partnership with Gotham Chamber Opera.

“Daniel Schnyder and Bridgette Wimberly are crafting a work that captures Charlie Parker’s complex musical genius and troubled life in an engaging and honest way. We are honored to bring together a diverse group of artists, some of whom are new to opera, to create a work that will expand the boundaries of operatic music through the influence and infusion of Parker’s music.”
